Police's Term Glossary

Hello everyone in this glossary, you will be able to observe several words that I will use in my blog or that you can simply hear from the mouths of the police officers in everyday life. Also, the words that you'Re going to read here are words that you can also found on TV and that have to do with crime and being a police officer. I hope this glossary help you understand better the police officer universe. Thank you and have fun reading it!

Fingerprint
Noun
The base-pair pattern in an individual's DNA obtained by DNA fingerprinting. (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fingerprint)
Example: The fingerprint found on the murder weapon matches our suspect's fingerprint.

Infiltrated
Verb

Example: The policeman infiltrated a large group of drugs traffickers.

Criminal record
Noun

Example: It's hard to find a job when you have a criminal record.

Noun

Example: Today the police arrested the leader of a large gang established in Montreal.

Noun

Example: He's being held in police custody overnight.

Noun

Example: A complainant came to the station today to file a statement against his neighbor.

A criminologist
Noun
The scientific study of crime as a social phenomenon, of criminals, and of penal treatment (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/criminologist)
Example: The agent went to see a criminologist to better understand how to intervene with this type of criminal

A dog-handler
noun

Example: We found the victims thanks to foot patrollers, volunteers and dog handlers

Alibi
Noun

Example: Our number one suspect has an alibi which now excludes him from our suspect list

Example: We believe someone set this house on fire on purpose, so we called arson.

Verb
Make an effort to achieve or complete (something, typically a difficult task or action).
Example: The criminal attempt to kill his ex-wife because she now has a new husband.

Attorney
Noun
A person appointed to act for another in business or legal matters (Lawyer).
Example: The attorney is trying to build his case against the witness confession.

Cavalry
Noun

Example: During the strike in Montreal, the officers called the SPVM cavalry to keep people away

Noun

Example: They found a clue near the crime scene.

Coercion
Noun
The practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats. (https://www.google.com/search?q=define+Coercion)
Example: They used coercion to stabilize the suspect and obtain information.

Noun

Example: George finally confessed the attempting murder he did on his ex-wife Maya.

Noun

Example: The police officers are trying to understand this crime scene.

Noun

Fingerprinting
Noun

Example: We recognized this criminal, thanks to the fingerprinting took from him 5 years ago.

Identity parade
Noun

Example: The police made an identity parade so that the victim identifies the criminal without influencing him.

Investigation
Verb

Example: The police officers finally closed the investigation about the robbery in the Canadian Bank

Noun
An official empowered to act for a higher official
Example: The lieutenant asked me to deal with this matter as quickly as possible

Nautical agent

Example: The nautical agents make a patrol on water because there are a lot of people on their boat today.

Example: The police officers are patrolling in the hot spot. *Hot spot: Way to call places where officers know there's a lot of criminal acts.

Verb

Example: The police searched his house for illegal drugs.

Suspect
Noun

Example: They finally found a man that matches the suspect description.

Noun

Example: The judge finally gave his approval for the search warrant on the territory of the famous Ricoti family
